Aging is an unavoidable part of life that most, in their own way, try to prevent with exercise, diet, sun protection, hydration and by following a daily skin care routine. However, in recent years, more people are asking when is the right time to get Botox® rather than “if” they should get it.
Botox, an injectable cosmetic treatment, corrects and prevents the visible signs of facial aging by relaxing overactive facial muscles and decreasing movement that causes wrinkles.
Genetic Aging and Late Teens
Getting Botox® in the late teen years of adulthood may be taking the anti-aging game to the extreme, but it might be right for a person who is genetically predisposed to developing specific patterns of lines and wrinkles. By looking at family photos you’ll discover potential issues to watch for. If everyone has the same set of wrinkles, a drooping eyebrow or eyelids; Botox® can be used prophylactically to treat these areas before they become problematic. It is far easier and more cost effective to slow down rapid muscle movement early on rather than waiting until permanent lines form.
Botox® in your 20’s
Most women and men do not have wrinkles in their early 20’s but around the mid-twenties superficial fine lines appear. No matter the age, Botox® injections consistently erase fine lines and retrains muscles in a way that prevents facial over-expression. On average, many patients in their 20’s respond well to 1-3 preventative Botox treatments per year.
Botox® in your 30’s
During this decade vertical lines form between the brows, creases across the forehead become more visible, and fine lines creep in around the eye areas. In the mid to late 30’s, you might find that makeup has a tendency to build-up and settle into deeper creases. Botox® will help make the skin taut and smooth which minimizes the depth of those creases. Chemical peels are a complimentary treatment to Botox® that helps smooth the skin’s surface. At this age, Botox® continues to be a prophylactic wrinkle treatment and minimizes deeper creases. On average treatments are recommended every 3-6 months.
Botox® in your 40’s
In your 40’s, due to age-related loss of volume and thinning of the skin, wrinkles are more prominent and visible. Sagging skin may also become a concern. If Botox® has not previously been used, the facial muscles have had many years of repetitive contractions and ample time to bulk up. Botox® continues to help smooth facial skin, but further treatments such as micro needling may be needed to address texture issues. Botox® in the 40th decade prevents existing wrinkles from growing deeper into the skin and can be used to lift some areas where the skin is beginning to sag.
